As we age, every single layer of our face is affected – from bone and muscle to our skin – forehead included. The forehead is a highly expressive area, and the downside of all that movement is the formation of lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin thanks to collagen and elastin loss as we age. In our 50s, we can expect bone resorption around the orbit which causes a lowering and sagging of the brow too. We know how beneficial dermal fillers can be in the rest of the face, so it may come as no surprise to learn that they can be used to restore lost volume and correct ageing concerns in the forehead, too. But is the procedure safe? And what should you expect in terms of results? Read on for everything you need to know.
What do forehead fillers do?
There are several advantages to forehead fillers. They can be used to improve the shape of the forehead, reduce deep static lines and wrinkles, and improve facial symmetry. By injecting dermal fillers into the forehead, we can increase the forehead projection and improve the appearance of a protruded brow bone. This is because the dermal fillers can increase the volume in just the right places and reshape the forehead in a more aesthetically pleasing way. The filler injections will be positioned in line with the overall shape and structure of the face for natural, subtle results.
Forehead fillers are also an effective way to smooth deep lines and wrinkles that can’t be completely eradicated with Botox alone. The filler is used to fill the hollow underneath the line plumping it up and smoothing its appearance. This is also effective for smoothing out the appearance of the forehead overall, by bringing all areas to the same level.
How does it compare to Botox in this area?
Botox targets muscle movement in the upper face, smoothing out lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes and preventing them from deepening. But dermal fillers target different aspects of ageing, correcting volume loss or adding structure and support to static lines and wrinkles. They can reshape the profile of a face, enhancing the forward projection of a man’s forehead or creating a curved effect on a woman. The two treatments can be combined for greater forehead rejuvenation, but they both have very different purposes.
How risky are forehead fillers?
Forehead filler injections – particularly to the lower middle of the forehead, where you may see frown lines – are considered high risk. We have many arteries running under the skin in this area, and if the filler is accidentally injected into one of these arteries, it can lead to necrosis (skin tissue death caused by a blockage to the blood supply). Although very rare, blindness is a consequence of intravascular injection, so it’s imperative to see someone with a medical background who is properly trained and very experienced in this procedure.
Ultimately filler performed in the right hands and used alongside muscle relaxing injections can truly youth boost your forehead, but make sure you do your research, ask plenty of questions and ensure your chosen practitioner is medically qualified and experienced in treating this area.
