Hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of patches of skin caused by an increase of melanin, a natural pigment in our bodies. This condition is particularly common in people with darker skin and in those who have had high exposure to the sun, often showing on the face, hands and back. It can also be caused by inflammation, hormonal influences, incorrect post-operative care and other skin injuries.
Early symptoms include dark spots or patches on the skin, which may then develop into larger areas varying from light brown to black in colour and also variable in size and shape. Freckles, age spots and melasma are all types of hyperpigmentation.
