Dermal Filler Complications Management
Management and Treatment of Dermal Filler Complications, Maidstone, Kent
Although the vast majority of aesthetic treatments go smoothly, unfortunately, occasionally, problems can arise.
Lumps, nodules, granulomas and filler migration are all genuine risks associated with dermal filler as well as more severe complications such as allergic reactions, infections and vascular occlusions. Fortunately, these days, the majority of dermal filler treatments are carried out using hyaluronic acid-based products. This means that if you don’t like the results, have been over-treated or experience a complication, it’s possible to reverse the treatment by injecting the filler with Hyalase, an enzyme (hyaluronidase) that breaks down hyaluronic acid.
Illuminate medical director, Dr Sophie Shotter, is passionate about raising awareness of aesthetic safety. Along with her role as an aesthetic doctor, she is also a complications lead for the Allergan Faculty. Within this role, she helps Allergan support their clients who have experienced treatment complications all over the country.
Dr Shotter offers an innovative approach to dermal filler complications management. Using a handheld ultrasound device, she can determine precisely what’s happening beneath the skin, targeting the filler or blocked artery directly with very minimal damage to the surrounding tissues.
Although most medical practitioners should be aware of managing complications, some problems can be very delicate. Occasionally, an expert eye is needed to obtain the most satisfactory result.

1
Is it safe?
A great deal of experience is required to use Hyalase, but it is a very safe option when used in the right hands. Our approach of combining the Hyalase with Ultrasound ensures that we are targeting the filler very precisely with minimal effects on the surrounding tissues.
2
What will happen at my appointment?
In the first instance, we will always recommend you visit your initial practitioner to discuss your concerns. If you’re unable to get hold of your practitioner, or they’re not willing to help, we will invite you for an initial consultation with Dr Shotter.
Using the same technology used to look at a baby in the womb, we will scan the face and locate filler that may be causing problems. Once this has been established, we can use targeted dissolving to break down the filler where appropriate. This may be carried out over various appointments, depending on the area and the amount of filler that needs dissolving.
Very occasionally, we may refer patients on for MRI scans as sometimes, no matter how well we think filler has been dissolved, there may still be something underlying that’s continuing to cause problems.
3
When will I see results?
Some results of Hyalase injections will be visible immediately, with the full effects taking hold within 24 hours.
