Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a widespread concern impacting millions of individuals around the world, and it can be profoundly life-changing for those who experience it. Urinary incontinence is characterised by the inability to retain urine within the bladder – some individuals may encounter occasional leaks and dribbles, while others struggle to maintain control over their bladder for extended durations or feel that their bladder never fully empties.
For those grappling with severe incontinence issues, the use of incontinence pads becomes a necessity to avoid the embarrassment of visible leaks. This condition can impose significant restrictions on your daily life. Even routine activities like using public transport or going on a holiday can become a source of stress or near impossible as you don’t know where to find the nearest toilet.
As a particularly sensitive and private issue, incontinence can also have a significant effect on your self-confidence. It can prevent sufferers from doing things they used to enjoy and hinder their social life due to stress about how to control their bladder when not at home. As a rather stigmatised condition, leaks and dribbles can be particularly embarrassing for sufferers, and can cause them to lose out on experiences they would jump at if not for their concerns about urinary incontinence.
We treat patients across Kent and the South East, including West Malling, Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Gravesend and the surrounding areas, helping them to overcome urinary incontinence and significantly improve their quality of life.
What Causes Urinary Incontinence?
Incontinence can be caused by a wide variety of factors, which sometimes makes managing it more difficult.
Incontinence arises when the strength of the bladder, urethra, pelvic floor muscles, or a combination thereof is insufficient to retain urine within the bladder when it reaches its full capacity. This inadequacy leads to urine leakage and difficulties in maintaining control over your urinary functions.
This can occur due to a variety of reasons including childbirth, the natural ageing process, psychological influences, underlying medical conditions, menopause, or a blend of these elements.
Different Types of Urinary Incontinence
Some of the most common forms of incontinence are stress incontinence, urge incontinence and mixed incontinence.
Stress Incontinence
This occurs when there is an increase in abdominal pressure, such as during coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising. It is often caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder and urethra.
Urge Incontinence
Also known as an overactive bladder, this type of incontinence involves a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by an involuntary bladder contraction and leakage. It is commonly associated with an overactive detrusor muscle, which controls bladder contractions.
Mixed Incontinence
Mixed incontinence refers to a combination of two or more types of urinary incontinence. For example, a person may experience both stress and urge incontinence simultaneously.
Treating Urinary Incontinence with Emsella
The Emsella device is a throne-like chair that delivers electromagnetic pulses similar to the EmSculpt treatment where electromagnetic energy is focused into a beam to stimulate muscle contractions. Instead of focusing that energy on abdominal muscles, it’s focused on your pelvic floor. It helps women that have had children who are suffering from stress incontinence or vaginal laxity to strengthen the pelvic muscles and eliminate the symptoms or urinary incontinence. Using high intensity focused electro-magnetic technology, Emsella delivers the equivalent of 11,000 Kegels in one 30-minute session, giving the muscles that control continence a great workout, as well as triggering growth factors in the muscles and increasing the number and strength of muscle fibres.
The Emsella treatment can be carried out in under half an hour per session and is completely painless. You can also remain fully clothed throughout the procedure, a revolutionary development in intimate health treatments. We recommend six sessions of Emsella treatment for optimum results, though many women can see and feel results from the very first treatment session.
