Melasma
Melasma causes large patches of light to dark brown skin to appear on the face, in particular on the nose, cheeks, upper lip and forehead, with areas of discolouration often developing over time. Melasma can also appear on other parts of the body, especially those that have been over exposed to the sun.

About this condition
This condition is very common in women. Pregnant women in particular are prone to developing chloasma, which is a related condition. It can affect women on certain contraceptive pills and is linked to female reproductive hormones. Genetics and the menopause are also a strong influencing factor in women developing Melasma.
