IPL for Pigmentation
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a light therapy treatment that can treat a wide range of pigmentation. These include age or sunspots, freckles and other marks blemishes or patches of discolouration that have usually been caused by past exposure to the sunlight, injury or hormonal changes. IPL uses pulsed light energy to heat and destroy the melanin that has caused the pigmentation.
Depending on the type of pigment being treated, we may recommend IPL on its own or in combination with other treatments or skincare creams. IPL has the added benefit of often improving the texture and tone of the skin and helping to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles.

How does this treatment work?
IPL works by targeting the melanin that has caused the pigment to form with short pulses of light. The energy from the light heats and breaks down the melanin into small particles that are naturally disposed of by the body.
What happens during my treatment?
A layer of gel will be applied to the treatment area and the light applicator which fires the light pulses is moved across the skin until the whole area has been treated. The original gel is removed and a cooling gel is then applied. You will be asked to wear protective goggles during your treatment.
Will I feel any pain or side effects?
Some patients feel mild discomfort during treatment and the area may also feel warm and sensitive following treatment. The pigmentation that has been treated may appear darker in colour for a few days before fading away.
Very occasionally a blister may form. Full aftercare will be provided.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
IPL is suitable for most people over 18, but we will not recommend this treatment if you have very dark or tanned skin or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
