About this treatment

Why have a flu vaccination?

The flu is very contagious and affects people of all ages, with even fit and healthy people suffering from symptoms. Different strains of influenza can be passed through sneezing, coughing or by touching infected surfaces or people. It can be particularly severe for those more at risk of developing complications, and these people are entitled to a free NHS vaccination.

If you’d like to lower your risk of catching and preventing the spread of infection among family, friends and work colleagues, having a winter flu vaccination is a great option.

The flu vaccination helps to protect against the three strains of the flu virus, including the H1N1 virus. If you’re considering getting vaccinated this year the best time to have the vaccine is in the autumn, giving you maximum protection before the flu season starts.

There is now clinical data which suggests that the combination of influenza and COVID-19 increases the risk of morbidity. As we start to approach the flu season, this makes it more important than ever that we take action where possible to safeguard ourselves against illnesses, especially if we are more at risk.
