Spider veins treatment, West Malling, Kent
Spider veins – those small, visible red, blue, or purple lines that often appear on the legs – are one of the most common concerns we see in clinic. While they’re not usually harmful, they can be a source of self-consciousness, especially in warmer months when you might want to wear dresses, skirts, or shorts. The good news is that there are effective, safe, and minimally invasive treatments that can reduce or remove them entirely.
What are spider veins and why do they appear?
Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are tiny blood vessels located just beneath the surface of the skin that have become dilated or damaged. They can look like fine threads, branches, or web-like clusters, hence the name.
They often develop on the legs because the veins there work harder to pump blood back to the heart against gravity. Over time, the small valves in these veins can weaken, allowing blood to pool and cause these vessels to become visible. Genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged standing or sitting, and even sun exposure can all contribute to their development.
Can spider veins go away on their own?
Unfortunately, once spider veins appear, they won’t disappear without treatment. While you can take steps to prevent new ones from forming, like avoiding long periods of standing, wearing compression stockings, and protecting your skin from the sun, existing spider veins require targeted intervention to be removed.
Treating spider veins with the Nordlys laser
At Illuminate Skin Clinic, we use the Nordlys laser as our gold-standard treatment for spider veins on the legs. This advanced device uses targeted light energy to heat the unwanted blood vessels, causing them to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body. Over the following weeks, the treated veins fade until they are barely visible, if at all.
The Nordlys laser is particularly effective for smaller superficial veins, and because the treatment is so precise, it leaves the surrounding skin untouched. Most people see a noticeable difference after just one session, although a course of treatments may be recommended for the best results.
What to expect during and after treatment
Treatment with the Nordlys laser is quick, and discomfort is minimal – many patients describe the sensation as a light snapping or tingling on the skin. After your session, you might notice some temporary redness, slight swelling, or a darkening of the treated veins before they fade. There’s very little downtime, and you can usually get back to your normal activities straight away, although it’s best to avoid intense exercise and hot baths for 24 hours.
How long do results last?
Once a spider vein has been treated successfully, it won’t come back. However, the underlying tendency to develop new ones remains, particularly if you have a family history. That’s why many patients choose occasional top-up treatments to maintain clear skin over time.
Preventing new spider veins
While you can’t control every factor, there are steps you can take to protect your results. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding prolonged sitting or standing, and protecting your skin from the sun can all make a difference. If you have a job that requires long hours on your feet, wearing light compression hosiery can also help.
Spider veins on the legs are a common concern, but they don’t have to be permanent. With the Nordlys laser, we can target them safely and effectively, restoring a clearer, more even appearance to your skin.
