If you’re looking for a non-surgical way to reduce stubborn fat pockets that just won’t shift with diet and exercise, you’ve likely come across two of the most popular treatments: fat dissolving injections and CoolSculpting. Both are powerful body contouring options, but they work in very different ways. Understanding how each treatment works, and which is most suited to your goals, is key to getting the results you’re after. Let’s break down the differences to help you make an informed decision.
What are fat-dissolving injections?
Fat dissolving injections are designed to target small, localised areas of fat -most commonly under the chin, around the jawline, and sometimes on the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. The injections often contain deoxycholic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body and helps break down dietary fat. When injected directly into unwanted fat deposits, it disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the cell to break down and be flushed out naturally by the lymphatic system. We also use a product called pb serum, which instead of deoxycholic acid utilises enzymes to break down the fat cells, with excellent results.
The process takes just a few minutes and is usually performed over a course of two to four sessions, spaced a few weeks apart. Results appear gradually as the body metabolises the fat cells, and once those cells are gone, they’re gone for good, making this a long-lasting solution if you maintain a healthy lifestyle.
What is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting, also known as cryolipolysis, uses cold temperatures to freeze and destroy fat cells. During treatment, an applicator is placed on the targeted area to cool fat cells to a temperature where they undergo apoptosis (cell death), without damaging surrounding tissue. Over the following weeks, the body gradually eliminates the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system.
CoolSculpting is particularly popular for larger or flatter areas of fat, such as the lower abdomen, love handles, thighs, back, or upper arms. Like fat dissolving injections, the results are permanent for the fat cells that are removed, though maintaining your weight is key to preserving your results.
Fat dissolving injections vs CoolSculpting: What’s the difference?
The biggest difference between these two treatments lies in the method: injections use a chemical to dissolve fat, while CoolSculpting uses cold to freeze it. But the other differences lie in the treatment experience, ideal treatment areas, and what sort of results you’re likely to see.
Fat dissolving injections are better suited for smaller, more defined areas such as the chin and jawline, or small pockets that need precision. CoolSculpting, on the other hand, is better for treating larger surface areas where pinchable fat can be pulled into the applicator (although it is also effective under the chin).
The sensation during treatment is also different. With fat dissolving injections, there may be a brief stinging or burning feeling at the injection site, followed by swelling and tenderness for several days. With CoolSculpting, you’ll feel intense cold and suction for the first few minutes, followed by numbness. There may be temporary redness, bruising, or swelling after the session.
How quickly will you see results?
Neither treatment offers instant results, and both require patience. Fat dissolving injections tend to show visible improvement within four to six weeks of each session, with results continuing to build after each treatment. CoolSculpting results usually become noticeable within three to four weeks and continue improving for up to three months.
The number of sessions you’ll need depends on the size of the treatment area and your personal goals. Fat dissolving injections often require two to four sessions, while CoolSculpting might be completed in one to two rounds, though some areas may need follow-up treatments.
Which one is right for you?
If your goal is to refine and sculpt smaller, targeted areas like under the chin, fat dissolving injections may be the better option. They’re highly effective for contouring and defining where precision is needed.
If you’re looking to debulk a larger area of fat, like the tummy, flanks, or thighs, CoolSculpting could be more efficient. It covers more surface area in a single session and is entirely non-invasive, with no needles involved.
It’s also worth considering your tolerance for downtime. Fat dissolving injections usually come with more swelling and tenderness, especially in the first few days post-treatment. CoolSculpting’s downtime tends to be minimal, though some people experience numbness or tingling for a few weeks afterwards.
Can you combine the two?
Yes, in some cases, a combination of both treatments can provide the best results -CoolSculpting to reduce overall bulk in an area, followed by fat dissolving injections to refine and shape specific pockets. Your treatment plan should always be tailored to your body, your goals, and the type of result you want to achieve.
Both fat dissolving injections and CoolSculpting are effective, non-surgical ways to contour the body and reduce stubborn fat. The best choice for you will depend on your treatment area, timeline, pain tolerance, and desired outcome. If you’re unsure where to start, booking a consultation is the ideal first step.
