Polynucleotides Treatment, Kent or London
Polynucleotides have quickly become one of the most talked-about treatments in regenerative aesthetics. Known for their ability to support cellular repair, reduce inflammation and improve overall skin quality, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the most exciting injectables available today. But with their growing popularity, many people are starting to ask, can polynucleotides be microneedled into the skin instead of injected?
It’s a great question, especially for those who are hesitant about needles or are already using microneedling in their skincare routine. But the answer is a little more nuanced than a simple yes or no.
What are polynucleotides, and how do they work?
Polynucleotides are long chains of highly purified DNA fragments, typically derived from salmon or trout. When injected into the skin, they help create an ideal environment for tissue regeneration. They stimulate fibroblasts (the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin), encourage repair at a cellular level, and improve hydration by supporting the skin barrier.
The result? Healthier, stronger, more resilient skin that looks smoother, firmer and better supported, especially in areas that are prone to fine lines, crepiness or damage. We often use polynucleotides to treat the delicate under-eye area, as well as the face, neck and even décolletage for a subtle, natural-looking glow.
Why injection is the gold standard
Polynucleotides are designed to work within the deeper layers of the skin. When injected, they reach the dermis, where collagen and elastin are formed. This is what gives them their regenerative power, by being placed precisely where they’re needed, they’re able to kickstart deep tissue repair and trigger longer-term improvements in skin quality.
Microneedling, by contrast, typically only affects the upper layers of the skin (epidermis and superficial dermis). While it can certainly boost skin texture, stimulate collagen and help with superficial concerns like fine lines or enlarged pores, it doesn’t deliver substances as deeply or as directly as an injection.
Can polynucleotides be used with microneedling?
Technically, yes, they can be applied topically during or after a microneedling session, and some clinics do use this technique. The microchannels created during microneedling can allow some absorption of active ingredients, including polynucleotides, into the skin.
However, this method isn’t as effective or targeted as injecting. The depth and quantity of product delivered through microneedling is significantly less than what you’d achieve with precise injections. So while you may see some benefit, the real regenerative effects, collagen stimulation, barrier support, long-term tissue health, come from placing polynucleotides exactly where they’re needed in the dermis. That’s why we primarily recommend injectable polynucleotides for patients who want to experience the full spectrum of benefits.
Combining treatments for enhanced results
That said, microneedling can still play an important role in your overall skin health journey. In fact, combining treatments can often lead to even better outcomes.
For example, we may use microneedling to improve superficial texture or tone, and polynucleotide injections to address deeper skin changes and to support regeneration from within. It’s about choosing the right treatment, at the right time, for the right concern.
A thorough consultation is key. We’ll assess your skin, discuss your goals, and create a bespoke plan that may include a combination of treatments to support both the surface and deeper layers of your skin.
The bottom line
Polynucleotides are most effective when injected into the skin. While microneedling may allow for some superficial absorption, it doesn’t offer the same level of precision, depth or regenerative impact. For patients looking for meaningful, long-lasting improvement in skin strength, hydration and resilience, injectable polynucleotides remain the gold standard.
