Under-Eye Bag Treatments, Kent and London
Under-eye bags are a common cosmetic concern that many people experience with age. They can make you look tired, older, or unwell, even when you’re feeling perfectly fine. With the rise of minimally invasive treatments, dermal fillers have become a popular choice for addressing a range of aesthetic concerns, including the under-eye area. But are fillers the right solution for under-eye bags? Let’s explore what causes under-eye bags, how fillers may help, and what other treatments could be more suitable for this delicate area.
What Causes Under-Eye Bags?
Under-eye bags are often associated with ageing, but they can also appear due to genetics, lifestyle factors, or health conditions. As we age, the tissues around the eyes, including some of the supporting muscles, begin to weaken. Fat that is usually confined to the area around the eyes can protrude, creating a puffy or baggy appearance. Additionally, fluid may accumulate in this area, exacerbating the swelling.
Lifestyle factors like lack of sleep, excessive salt intake, and dehydration can also contribute to under-eye puffiness. Allergies or sinus problems can create temporary bags, while genetic predisposition might make you more likely to develop them even at a younger age. Understanding the underlying cause is essential to determine the best course of treatment.
Can Fillers Help with Under-Eye Bags?
Dermal fillers can be an effective option for some people with under-eye bags, but they are not a universal solution. Fillers work by adding volume to areas of the face where it has been lost, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance. In the case of under-eye bags, an extensive approach with fillers is usually needed – it’s not as simple as correcting the “tear trough” — the hollow area just beneath the under-eye bags.
Using fillers in the cheeks and temple, we can restore some support for the eye bags and improve their appearance indirectly. We can then consider treating the tear trough hollow with a minimal amount of product to improve the appearance further. By filling this hollow, the contrast between the fullness of the bag and the surrounding area is reduced, making the bags less noticeable. This approach is particularly effective for those whose under-eye bags are mild and primarily caused by volume loss rather than significant fat protrusion or skin laxity.
However, fillers are not a magic wand. In cases of severe under-eye bags caused by pronounced fat deposits or loose skin, fillers might not only fail to provide the desired improvement but could actually make the area appear more swollen or uneven.
Other Treatments to Consider
If fillers are not suitable, there are other non-surgical and surgical options that may be more effective. For mild under-eye puffiness caused by fluid retention, lifestyle changes like improving sleep habits, reducing salt intake, and using a cold compress can provide noticeable improvements.
Skincare products with ingredients such as caffeine, retinol, or peptides can help tighten the skin and reduce puffiness temporarily. Professional treatments like microneedling, laser therapy, polynucleotides or radiofrequency can also improve the texture and firmness of the under-eye skin, making the area look smoother and less puffy.
For individuals with pigmentation or dark circles worsening the appearance of under-eye bags, chemical peels or topical lightening agents may be recommended. These treatments work by addressing discolouration rather than the physical structure of the bags themselves.
When Surgery Is the Best Option
In cases of significant under-eye bags caused by fat deposits or loose skin, surgery may be the most effective option. Lower eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure designed to remove or reposition excess fat and tighten the skin, creating a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
While surgery is more invasive than fillers or other non-surgical options, it provides long-lasting results that can address the root cause of the under-eye bags rather than simply masking them. Modern surgical techniques are increasingly refined, minimising recovery time and ensuring natural-looking outcomes.
It’s important to consult with a qualified aesthetic plastic surgeon or oculoplastic surgeon to determine whether surgery is the right choice for you. They can assess the underlying cause of your under-eye bags and explain the potential risks and benefits of each treatment option.
