Neck Botox and Filler – what are the differences, and which is better?

Neck Botox and Dermal Fillers, West Malling, Maidstone, Kent

While we strengthen our faces with serums and SPF, necks are an easy target for the ageing process. Usually, it creeps up on us when we aren’t looking, and the main culprits are crepey skin and neck wrinkles, which tend to go hand in hand. But the good news is, there’s a good deal we can do to improve the appearance of our neck, and the most effective treatments include the highly sought-after injectables – Botox and dermal fillers. But Botox and fillers for the neck work very differently. For this reason, we are outlining the benefits of each, what makes one or the other a better option, and how to tell which one is right for your concerns.

Why does my neck look older than my face?

It will come as no surprise to hear that the skin on the neck is much thinner than on the face, which means it collapses more easily into wrinkles and folds. Since we constantly move our necks, the skin is continuously being stretched and scrunched. There are also very few oil glands in neck skin to keep it hydrated and supple. This all gets much worse for women when we go through the menopause, as thanks to a reduction in oestrogen, the skin becomes drier and loses elasticity.

Another culprit is that most of us didn’t learn to look after our necks at a young enough age. There wouldn’t be as much to correct if we took a thorough approach to applying targeted serums, moisturisers, and sunscreen to this area from our twenties. But, in reality, our necks don’t get much attention until the damage is already done, and past a certain age – usually around the menopause – the effects of this neglect become very noticeable.

What’s the difference between Botox and filler in the neck?

While Botox and filler both correct signs of ageing on the neck, how they do so couldn’t be more different. Botox works on the muscles under the skin by preventing them from contracting. This prevents the overlying skin from folding and, therefore, improves the appearance of wrinkles. On the other hand, fillers are hyaluronic acid-based injectables that directly plump the skin to restore lost volume and definition and plump out wrinkles.

Another key difference is time to see results and longevity. It typically takes seven to fourteen days to see results from Botox, whereas you can usually see the effects of filler immediately. In addition, Botox generally lasts three to four months, whilst neck fillers can remain effective for up to a year, depending on your metabolism.

What can neck injectables do?

Botox in the neck is sometimes referred to as a ‘Nefertiti neck lift’, named after the Egyptian queen famous for her sculpted jawline and beautiful neck. The procedure is excellent for softening tight banks of muscle down the neck, the ones that pop up when we clench our teeth, for example – the results can be really transformative. Fillers, on the other hand, are more appropriate for treating horizontal lines also known as “necklace lines”. We can place a thin thread of filler under these lines to smooth them out and make them look less noticeable. They can also be used to contour and lift the chin to undermine potential sagging by making the underlying skin firmer and tighter.

How do I know which one is right for me?

The best treatment for you depends on the severity of the wrinkles and your overall treatment goals. Patients with deeper lines are usually better candidates for filler, while those with more superficial lines or who want a little tightening may find that Botox is a better option. But, of course, you should always see an experienced medical practitioner who will examine your neck and customise a treatment plan for you that’s based on your specific concerns. The neck is a complicated area, so an in-person examination with a practitioner experienced in treating this area is crucial.

Along with Botox and fillers, other procedures, such as Profound RF and even something as simple as a good, targeted neck cream, can go a long way in helping to improve the overall texture and tone of your neck skin.
