What is radiofrequency microneedling and what is the best device?
Radiofrequency microneedling skin tightening treatments, West Malling, Maidstone, Kent.
As more and more facials combine cutting edge technology with a hands-on approach, the demand for treatments such as radiofrequency microneedling is ever increasing. RF microneedling is one of many treatment options that promise to revive tired, dull, and ageing skin. So, what makes it unique? And is it worth investing in? This is everything that you need to know.
How does it work?
With a clinical device, microneedling is an excellent treatment for creating a smoother, firmer, fresher-looking face as the skin races to repair the thousands of tiny puncture wounds by producing more collagen. Radiofrequency (RF), which heats the collagen layer within the skin enough to damage it (cue more collagen repair), is also a very impressive treatment. Combining the two, by firing the RF energy out of the tips of the needles while they’re deep in the skin, makes for a very effective treatment giving a result that is usually pretty hard to achieve through non-surgical means.
Both technologies are collagen stimulating in different ways. Microneedling creates micro-trauma in the skin, stimulating the healing response, while radiofrequency uses heat to shrink wrap and tighten the skin. Hence why they work so well together and provide much quicker results than having microneedling and/or RF individually.
It can be used on the face, neck, decolletage and body for skin tightening and contouring. It’s one of those treatments that does it all and will benefit most people – skin will be tighter, healthier, and more youthful and you’ll see an improvement in texture and pore size, too.
Who is it suitable for?
Radiofrequency microneedling is an excellent treatment option for men and women in their thirties and beyond who have mild to moderate skin laxity. Signs that it would suit you include loose skin on the neck, jawline or under the chin, or lines, wrinkles and crepiness on the cheeks or around the mouth. While it isn’t a substitute for a facelift, RF microneedling appeals to patients who wish to achieve smoother, tighter, and firmer skin without surgery.
What results should you expect?
RF microneedling addresses many skin concerns, from fine lines and wrinkles and loose or sagging skin to rough, uneven skin texture and even stretch marks. It also pairs very well with other aesthetic treatments to supercharge results. You’ll often see it offered alongside dermal fillers to tighten and lift the facial contours whilst simultaneously rebuilding volume. Filler can help to provide the all-important strength and structure to create optimum support for facial contours.
What is the best device?
You’ll find several FDA-cleared RF microneedling devices available, and while all of these options essentially do the same thing, results can vary greatly.
In terms of ability, the Profound RF is four times more powerful than other RF microneedling devices. It delivers energy deeper into the tissues and for a longer amount of time, allowing us to achieve optimum protein denaturation within one treatment. This means that the Profound RF increases the production of elastin by about five-fold, we double collagen levels in the skin and dramatically increase hyaluronic acid levels.
This translates into tighter skin that’s regained its youthful bounce, a significant reduction in lines, wrinkles and sagging jowls, and the Profound RF can even reduce the fat pad under the chin to lift and define the jawline.
Getting the best treatment results is also partially dependent on who is administering them, given that there are different energy levels, needle penetration depths, number of passes etc, that your practitioner will have to evaluate for your particular concerns. So ensure that you choose a practitioner who can show you before and after photos and patient reviews so you know you’re getting the full picture.
