Non-surgical chin jobs, using dermal filler injections, are part of the growing trend for facial contouring. Optimising the chin helps create definition in the lower third of the face. When injected in combination with the lips, nose or jawline, it can balance the proportions of the face, creating a well-balanced and defined side profile, bringing harmony to the whole face.
If you’re intrigued by chin fillers and want to know whether it’s the right treatment for you, this is everything you need to know about sculpting your chin.
What is non-surgical chin augmentation?
Using a small needle, precise amounts of hyaluronic acid filler are injected under the skin and sometimes, straight to the bone to sculpt, plump and realign the shape of the chin in position with the lips, nose, and rest of the face. Lasting for approximately nine months, chin filler may appeal to anyone whose chin has changed as they’ve gotten older (we lose bone in the jawline, which can alter how our muscles pull on the area), or anyone with a genetically weaker chin requiring projection. In those with a soft jawline or rounder face, it helps increase definition, adds structure to help lift the appearance of jowls or double chins, and can also help to slim the face.
Chin filler may also be combined with other treatments like CoolSculpting or fat dissolving injections to help slim the area and create a beautiful balance. Both treatments reduce the under-chin fat and permanently kill the fat cells, meaning the area won’t grow any new ones (unless you become morbidly obese!)
What types of filler are used?
Firstly, a hyaluronic acid-based filler should be used. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced in the body, and it has a low risk of any side effects. A dense filler like Juvederm Volux is excellent for sculpting this area and creating projection. The amount of filler required is dependent on the person, though most people, on average, will need at least 1ml of filler for optimal results.
What results should you expect?
Chin filler can have many positive benefits on a face. The chin is one of the central pillars of the face, and if your chin is out of proportion, the rest of your face can look ‘off’. Filler can be used to balance the chin, elongate the lower third of the face and provide jawline definition whilst also supporting jowls and preventing a down-turning of the lip muscles. Chin filler can last anywhere from nine months to two years, depending on what type of filler was used, how fast your metabolism is, and the depth of the filler placement.
Are you a good candidate for treatment?
Chin filler isn’t suitable for everyone, and a consultation will be required prior to treatment to assess your concerns and discuss appropriate treatment options. If a patient has a strong jawline already, adding filler into the chin can make them look bottom heavy. It’s also crucial to assess which parts of the chin need treating – no two people are the same, and placing it in different spots will have different effects.
