Where can Botox be injected on the face?
After 30 years of experience in the field and approximately 80 million vials manufactured and distributed in that time, Botox is one of the most widely requested aesthetic treatments globally. But despite this, there is still much misinformation surrounding the subject, particularly what it can be used to treat. If you’re thinking about getting the popular treatment and are wondering ‘Where can Botox be injected in the face?’ or “Is it right for my concerns?’ this is everything that you need to know.
What is Botox?
Botulinum Toxin Type A is a dilute form of nerve toxin. When injected into the facial muscles, it interferes with the nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract. These effects last until the body disperses the drug, and the muscles recover their function once again – usually after three months. It doesn’t take much Botox to have a cosmetically pleasing effect of calming down the muscles, which leads to a subtle relaxation of lines and a fresher-looking face.
Which areas can be treated on the face?
Forehead lines
Forehead lines are expressive lines that become more apparent as we age. They occur primarily due to genetic ageing, however, sun damage or smoking can also result in the formation of creases that are deeper and more difficult to treat. Botox injections can lessen the appearance of forehead wrinkles but may not eradicate the lines, especially if they are deep. In this case, we may combine Botox with energy-based treatments like the Profound RF, dermal fillers, or microneedling.
Frown lines
Glabellar lines (frown lines) are the vertical creases that appear between the eyebrows and can make us appear permanently tired or angry. Botox can be used to smooth the lines, resulting in a refreshed and relaxed appearance. Again, if the lines are particularly deep, we may combine Botox with dermal filler to gently smooth and plump them out.
Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
Crow’s feet lines occur at the outer corners of the eyes and are sometimes referred to as ‘smile’ or ‘laughter’ lines. They form when we smile or squint and as the skin loses collagen and elastin with age, reducing its elasticity. Loss of volume in the cheek, also a natural part of the natural ageing process, also contributes to the formation of crow’s feet lines. Botox is the most popular solution for smoothing and eliminating lines in this area.
Gummy smile
A Gummy Smile occurs when overactive facial muscles around the nose and mouth pull the top lip upwards and expose the gums underneath. While some people are happy to leave this condition untreated, others are not comfortable with the appearance that a Gummy Smile can create. We treat this condition using a small sprinkling of Botox injections, which relaxes the muscles and causes the top lip to lower, hiding or reducing the visibility of the gums.
Chin
As we age, the muscles in the chin become overactive, meaning they flex more often than they should, creating a dimpled, puckered appearance. Botox can be used to relax these muscles, thereby smoothing and reducing the overall dimpled effect.
Neck
Botox can reduce the virtual lines across the neck by injecting the strong platysma muscle to relax it. As we age, the muscle often gets stronger as the shrinking jawbone allows it to pull downwards more forcefully. Botox stops this problem in its tracks and, when maintained, is an excellent preventative method for future signs of ageing.
Jaw (teeth grinding)
Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, usually affects people with overdeveloped jaw muscles and can cause several more complex problems. It can destroy dental enamel, causing long-lasting damage to teeth and can also cause severe headaches, as well as jaw and neck pain.
By treating the masseter muscle with Botox, we can relax and shrink the muscle to reduce or stop tooth grinding altogether. This treatment is also used for jawline slimming.
Botox helps to treat teeth grinding by weakening the masticatory muscles, lessening the muscles’ ability to clench and grind the jaw.
