You’re probably familiar with the idea of injecting fillers into the face to give back volume to, say, gaunt cheeks. These fillers are made from hyaluronic acid gel, which is great at holding onto water within the skin. And now there is a category of extra-runny hyaluronic acid gels designed not to give volume and add structure to the skin, but instead to provide extra hydration beneath the surface to boost radiance, smooth fines lines stimulate the production of collagen and elastin.
Profhilo is often confused with dermal fillers, and a common question that patients ask us is – ‘Can Profhilo be used to improve the look of jowls?’ This is everything you need to know.
What is Profhilo, and how does it work?
Profhilo is an ‘injectable moisturiser’ made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a potent moisturising factor naturally found in skin, muscle and joints. Its ability to draw 1000 times its own weight in water into the skin makes it ideal for binding and retaining water molecules, hydrating the skin from within to leave it fresh and radiant.
We all naturally produce and break down hyaluronic acid every day, but the process gets a little sluggish as we age. Profhilo is a runny substance that is injected at 5 points on each side of the face and spreads evenly throughout the layers of the skin, stimulating collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid along the way. This approach plumps the skin, diminishes fine lines and wrinkles whilst boosting the skin’s radiance and dewiness.
Can it improve jowls?
Profhilo is an excellent option if your goal is to improve skin tone, texture and elasticity. The intensive boost of hyaluronic acid that Profhilo provides works to hydrate the deeper skin tissues and, in the weeks following treatment, it stimulates collagen and elastin production to give a tightening and lifting effect. However, the lower face is one of the most challenging areas to treat. Jowls form due to bone and fat reabsorption and a reduction of collagen and elastin production, which causes the facial contours to droop downwards. This collects in the lower face, creating a saggy and ‘jowly’ appearance.
A detailed assessment of the face will allow your practitioner to identify the areas that need to be prioritised with treatment to restore the volume lost and achieve a natural-looking result. When improving jowls, often we combine multiple treatments for optimum results. This usually starts with an energy-based treatment such as RF microneedling to tighten and lift whilst dermal fillers rebuild lost volume and redefine the chin and jawline to create an overall lifted, youthful appearance.
We love to use these treatments in combination with Profhilo for a healthy, radiant and smooth complexion that beautifully showcases the results of the RF microneedling and dermal fillers.
What are the best treatment options for jowls?
Profound RF
The Profound RF combines microneedling and radiofrequency technologies to give a long-term lifting effect through all layers of the skin, from the lowest right up to the surface, making it an excellent solution for drooping jowls.
Microneedling creates minuscule injuries in the skin, simulating a natural healing response of production of new collagen and elastin fibres that tighten, smooth and resurface the skin. It also delivers targeted fractional radiofrequency deep into the dermis, which provides a powerful skin tightening effect.
Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are commonly used to rebuild volume and definition in areas of the face, such as the cheeks. When placed strategically, they can also help elevate the skin and lessen the appearance of jowls.
CoolSculpting
As far as jowls go, CoolSculpting won’t help them, but it will get rid of or reduce a double chin. CoolSculpting uses targeted cold therapy to freeze fat cells to -11 degrees C, at which point they will die and break up before being naturally disposed of by the body. While the procedure won’t eliminate jowls, it can be combined with another non-surgical treatment such as Profound RF to produce a beautifully sculpted result on the lower face.
