Profound RF vs. Morpheus8: Which is right for you?
In recent years, the demand for conventional plastic surgery has fallen as more and more of us opt for innovative non-invasive alternatives to achieve natural-looking results.
Among the no-knife options are technologies harnessing regenerative lasers, ultrasound, microneedling, and radiofrequency energy. These treatments don’t add anything into the skin; instead, they work more naturally to either stimulate a mega boost of our collagen production or work on the facial muscles themselves to tighten and lift. The best thing is that you still look like you – just fresher, smoother, lifted and more radiant.
Radiofrequency technology is just one way to convince the skin that it has been injured enough to kickstart the process of repair. Unlike laser, which mainly works on the skin’s surface, radiofrequency energy travels into the deeper layers of the dermis to lift and tighten from within.
The Profound RF and Morpheus8 are two radiofrequency and microneedling devices leading the way in modern-day skin resurfacing. They both aim to generate new, tighter and firmer skin, but how exactly do they work? What results can you expect to achieve? And what’s the difference between them?
What is Profound RF?
The Profound RF combines microneedling and radiofrequency technologies for an advanced skin tightening and rejuvenating effect. It’s designed to stimulate new elastin, collagen and hyaluronic acid – the critical building blocks that keep the skin smooth and elastic.
Radiofrequency devices (RF) use groundbreaking technology for tightening up the skin. Radiofrequency is commonly referred to as a treatment that can have a ‘shrink-wrapping’ effect. Typically, it does this by heating the lower layers of the skin (the dermis) to 42 degrees C, but the Profound RF penetrates much deeper into the facial tissues heating them to 67 degrees C, therefore stimulating a much stronger response.
The radiofrequency energy also makes the skin believe it’s injured, kickstarting lazy collagen and elastin into frenetic activity and encouraging growth factors and new collagen to heal the perceived wounds. In due course, this will show up on the surface as smoother, firmer and tighter skin.
When radiofrequency is combined with microneedling, as it is with this device, the heat is delivered much deeper into the skin, promoting further cell regeneration.
The Profound RF can also target and melt the fat pad under the chin to give a more refined contour to the jawline. Not only will this lift the face, but it also addresses fine lines, wrinkles and textural concerns.
The Profound RF isn’t your usual skin tightening treatment – it’s doctor-led and requires approximately one week of downtime as the skin heals. However, as a one-off treatment that produces results lasting several years, this is expected.
What is Morpheus8?
Like the Profound RF, Morpehus8 combines radiofrequency and microneedling technologies to stimulate firmer, smoother and tighter skin. Following your course of treatment, the skin will be tighter, healthier and more youthful, and you may also see an improvement in texture and pores.
There is minimal downtime with the Morpheus8. At most, the skin will feel hot and red following treatment, but this calms down within 4 to 24 hours. Results are often seen after just one treatment; however, a course of three is usually required for optimum results.
What’s the difference between the two devices in terms of results?
Both treatments combine microneedling and radiofrequency energy, but they are quite different in many ways.
Profound RF delivers energy four times deeper into the tissues and for a longer amount of time, allowing us to achieve optimum protein denaturation within one single treatment. This means that the Profound RF stimulates the production of elastin by about five-fold, we double collagen levels in the skin and dramatically increase hyaluronic acid levels.
Clinically, this translates into tighter skin that’s regained its youthful bounce, lifting of the jowls, significantly reduced lines and wrinkles, and the Profound RF can even target the fat pad under the chin to lift and refine the jawline.
Profound RF studies show a remarkable 100% response rate for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and a 95% response rate for improving sagging skin. It’s a one-off treatment that can deliver 1/3 of a facelift result in a single treatment, and results last for several years.
