Smear and HPV testing now available at Illuminate.
We are delighted to now offer smear and HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) testing at our Kings Hill Clinic. This treatment forms part of our new ‘Well-Woman’ offering and will be available at our Monday clinic from our expert nurse practitioner Dee Charlton.
The NHS screening program advises that between the ages of 25 and 49 women should have a smear test every 3 years to check for abnormal tissue or cell growth or the early signs of cervical cancer. This increases to every 5 years for women aged 50 or over. But many people ask to have a smear test more frequently or from a younger age for peace of mind.
HPV is the virus that can cause cervical cancer, as well as several other cancers, warts and genital warts. There are over 100 different types of HPV virus. HPV testing will be undertaken on the cells taken from a smear test, to help determine if HPV is present and is the patient if potentially at risk. Our test results will be available for patients within 1 week, rather than having to wait for up to 3 months for NHS test results.
Illuminate already offer Cervical Cancer Vaccinations for women over 18 who have not already been vaccinated. We use the Gardasil 9 vaccine to protect against the nine main types of the HPV virus, which together are responsible for over 90% of cervical cancers in this country. This can also protect against many other types of cancer in both men and women.
