What is CoolSculpting?

When Harvard scientists realised that children who sucked ice lollies for prolonged periods of time caused dimpling in their cheeks due to loss of fat, they realised there must be something in it. They harnessed this science to create CoolSculpting – a breakthrough, non-invasive technology that uses cooling to permanently destroy fat cells.

How does CoolSculpting work?

Fat cells freeze at a higher temperature to the cells in other surrounding tissues, which allows CoolSculpting to safely deliver precisely controlled cooling to fat cells underneath the skin. The treatment causes the fat cells to crystallise and undergo natural cell death (apoptosis). Over time your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates the dead cells, leaving you with a more sculpted physique.

What results can I expect from CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting can be used to literally reshape your body. Even people who follow a healthy diet and exercise have stubborn areas which are difficult to tone, and CoolSculpting is the perfect way to address these. We will develop a personalised treatment plan to address any areas of concern for you.

Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?

Good candidates for CoolSculpting have noticeable bulges in certain areas. It is not a weight loss solution, but can be used to debulk large areas. Every individual is different and a one-to-one consultation will allow us to determine if CoolSculpting is right for you.

What happens during a CoolSculpting session?

It is important to have a thorough consultation and to determine a personalised treatment plan for you. This will also involve taking a thorough medical history and taking some photographs to document your starting point before treatment.
You will then lay on the couch whilst we attach and program the CoolSculpting machine. Treatments take 1 to 2 hours depending on the area. Feel free to bring a book or your laptop if you would like to do some work. We have a television and Apple TV which you can use as well. Just lie back and relax! When the treatment is over we will vigorously massage the treated area.

Does CoolSculpting hurt?

During the first few minutes of treatment you may feel some pressure, deep pulling and intense cold. This soon dissipates, and most people don’t experience any further discomfort throughout the treatment. Occasionally you may feel tugging, pinching, numbness or slight discomfort.

How many CoolSculpting sessions will I need?

This depends on your personal goals and treatment plan, and we will be able to advise you better during your consultation.

Are there any side-effects to CoolSculpting?

Some people will not experience any side effects from CoolSculpting, but there are certain side effects that may occur:

  • Temporary numbness – this can persist for around a month in some cases, although it usually disappears quickly
  • Redness, swelling or firmness of the treated area
  • Bruising can occur in some people
  • Tingling, stinging or pain can occur in some people after treatment

Who should avoid CoolSculpting?

There are very few contra-indications to CoolSculpting, but patients with cryoglobulinaemia or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria should avoid treatment. It is also important to note that CoolSculpting is not a treatment for obesity.

Which body areas can be treated with CoolSculpting?

We can treat most areas of the body – the abdomen, flanks, bra fat pads, inner and outer thighs, and under arms. We can use a combination of treatment points to achieve the best results for you.

Do I need to avoid any activities after CoolSculpting?

You can return to normal activity immediately after your treatment – it is entirely non-invasive with no downtime.

Do I have to follow a special diet after CoolSculpting?

You do not need to alter your eating or exercise habits after CoolSculpting – just continue to follow a normal balanced diet and exercise programme. No additional supplements are needed either.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is the only fat freezing treatment which has been approved by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration in the USA). Multiple research papers have been published about CoolSculpting and over a million treatments have been performed. You can be assured you are receiving the best treatment available.

How is CoolSculpting different from other fat freezing treatments?

Other competitor products may claim to have FDA clearance or have research papers published about them, but this is not the case. All research published to date is with CoolSculpting. FDA clearance must be obtained for an individual device rather than for a treatment principle. There are several patented aspects of CoolSculpting which make it safer and more effective than other products:

  • Freeze Detect® technology is unique to CoolSculpting, and senses if your skin is being frozen rather than just your fat. If the sensors are triggered an alarm sounds, and we can halt treatment. This protects you from serious complications such as cold burns and ulcers, which are recognised complications with other machines.
  • CoolSculpting has 5 different attachments meaning we are able to treat many different body areas, unlike other products available.
  • CoolSculpting is a CE marked Class IIa medical device

How soon will I notice results from CoolSculpting?

You may notice improvements from 3 weeks onwards. Maximum results will be seen at around 2 months, with ongoing improvements up to 6 months as more fat cells are eliminated from the body.

What happens if I gain weight after CoolSculpting treatment?

Having treated the areas of your body which were most prone to fat deposition any future weight gain would be in a more even distribution. However we have found that most people who have CoolSculpting take even better care of themselves afterwards!
